swythamley school 1931Set in one of the most beautiful areas of England between the Cheshire Plains and the Peak Park, nestling amid narrow wooded country lanes below the Pennine Peaks, is this Community Centre. This was once a local village school, founded in 1902 by Philip Lancaster Brocklehurst, then in his 70’s and subsequently knighted. The premises were purchased by the community in 1981 when the extended school eventually closed. There have been several major additions and improvements to the building in its role as the community centre and offers spacious areas both inside and out, capable of accommodating all types of events from family parties, fair events to camping and caravan club weekends as well as Cubs and Guide Group camps. Facilities include both large and smaller rooms, a well equipped Kitchen, Bar area, a disabled friendly facilities throughout. Outside a large well maintained field and playground with good car parking areas.

Leek from Five CloudsAs an ideal base for many varied activities of the local area, walking and climbing around the Roaches and Rudyard lake, after which Rudyard Kipling was named, and numerous routes for ramblers. The local historic town of Leek boasts a wide variety of architecture and museums such as James Brindley’s first water Mill. There are connections with the French Huguenot Jacquard weavers, Joshua Wardle together with William Morris at the Nicholson Institute. Guided tours are available from the Tourist information office. Buxton is also within easy reach with its famous Opera House, Pavilion and St. Anne’s Parade. It’s Spa waters are still famous and available free from the well if you take along your own receptacle.
